Development Associates
Ian McLaughlin Development Associate and CSR Manager
Ian has considerable experience of delivering team events and his background spans both the corporate and charity sectors. He has over 15 years' learning and development experience that includes recruitment and assessment roles within London Underground; project management with Shelvoke’s; and was a senior consultant at Interaction learning and development. This experience is further complemented by exciting and challenging roles within the youth development charities, Raleigh International and The Prince’s Trust. At Raleigh, Ian was responsible for selecting and training both expedition staff and participants. For The Prince’s Trust, he managed teams of young people through the 12 week personal development programme.
Through his consultancy work, Ian has delivered programmes and events for over 70 organisations ranging from SME’s to multi nationals, including businesses such as Costain, Capgemini and ROK.
Ian brings to Across the Divide significant experience of designing and delivering team events that incorporate community / charity projects. He has led over 20 UK based CSR events and recently designed and delivered the Tamar ‘classroom building’ project in Cape Town and ‘school renovation’ project for Carphone Warehouse in Namibia. Ian is a proven Project Manager, conscientious, practical and with a good eye for detail. He approaches each event with enthusiasm and a real desire to ensure that both the needs of the client and the project partner are met.
Mark Hannaford Logistics and International CSR
Mark has over 23 years' experience of organising expeditions, events and projects overseas working in areas as different as the Kamchatka Peninsula and to the Namibian Desert to Antarctica and on projects as diverse as a school renovation projects in Brazil setting up a jungle wilderness medicine course for doctors in Costa Rica, and team building challenges in the Arctic Circle.
His approach is always with the strictest regards for project safety, and getting the exact balance between experience and learning to ensure the highest quality in everything that is offered.
Mark was a founding director of Across the Divide Expeditions, drawing on his experience of working with Raleigh International and time spent with a Territorial Army special forces regiment. This experience allows him to see the real issues and implement effective planning.
Mark is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society; the Royal Society and a past winner of BT's Entrepreneur of the Year Award; and an instructor on the Expedition, Desert, Polar and Jungle Medicine Courses
Case Studies Princes Trust - Developed and managed a series of extreme challenges in Morocco, Costa Rica, Namibia, South Africa and Borneo for corporate teams based around the concepts of challenge, teamwork, expedition.
Carphone Warehouse - 40 staff, one week redevemopment of remote school complex in Namibia providing dramtically improved eduational facilites for local school children.
Cancer Research UK. Development and implimentation of ten year fundraising package of overseas events and challenges raising over £2 million.
Piers Carter Development Associate
Piers’s passions in his working life are people and behaviour. He works with groups from a range of backgrounds from the Public Sector to blue chip organisations, specifically in the area of teams, leadership and effective performance. He specialises in a subtle combination of psychometric tests, behavioural workshops, challenging business simulations and active outdoor projects. Piers is up to date on the latest human resource and development theories including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, the Strength Deployment Inventory, Meta Planning, NLP, and Experiential Learning.
Piers has been running his own development training business for 9 years during which time he has worked with clients such as Walker’s Snack Foods, Equitas, Costain, Laings, Rabo Bank, Capital One, Mencap, British Airways, Queen’s Medical Centre, TransPennine Express and Barclay’s Bank.
Prior to this, Piers was a full time civilian trainer with the Home Office based at a National Training Centre. In this role he was responsible for developing leaders and teams within various police response units. The priority was to create adaptable and effective teams and leaders to operate under a variety of very different situations from the most aggressive and confrontational, to community patrols and the busy office.
Most recently Piers has been involved in facilitating proactive meetings focused on changing behaviour and improving performance with a selection of businesses. These sessions have taken all key stake holders and honed a practical and strategic action plan to take the organisations onto the next level. His other developing area of expertise is keynote speaking on the subjects of effective communication, dealing with difficult customers and motivation. Piers also works an internal trainer and motivator for Across the Divide Expeditions and Expedition Medicine Ltd
